Start with your experience, then the role
A tailored resume makes your relevant experience easier to find. Read the job description and identify the work, tools, and responsibilities the employer emphasizes. Compare those requirements with what you have actually done. Keep a complete base resume, then choose the strongest evidence for this application instead of copying every keyword. You can make these edits manually; AI is optional.
Build a draft and add the job description
Open the Resumetail builder and start blank, try the sample, or import an existing resume. Check your contact details, dates, education, and experience before tailoring. Manual editing and templates are free; AI import is a separate credit-based action. Paste the role's job description into the job matching and tailoring area. Remove confidential information you do not need to share and make sure it describes the role you intend to apply for.
The free resume match check can help you notice gaps. Its estimate is guidance, not an ATS certification or a hiring prediction. A missing skill is a reason to review your experience, not permission to add a skill you have never used.
Request suggestions, then decide what to keep
Sign in to request AI resume tailoring. It currently costs 9 credits per request, shown on the action before you proceed. New accounts receive 50 free AI credits with no payment required. Read the proposed changes before applying them. Keep wording that accurately describes your work, edit anything vague, and reject unsupported qualifications, responsibilities, or numbers. Credits pay for generating suggestions, even if you keep your original wording. Use the pricing and credit guide to compare optional AI actions and available one-time packs.
Example: make a real achievement more relevant
Suppose a customer support role asks for issue tracking and coordination. Your base resume says, “Helped customers and worked with the team.” If you actually used a ticket system and coordinated with product colleagues, a clearer version could be: “Tracked customer issues in the support queue and coordinated with the product team to resolve recurring problems.”
This describes relevant work without inventing a result. Add a response-time improvement or a ticket volume only when you can verify it. If you never used a ticket system, leave that detail out. The same rule applies to AI suggestions: better wording should clarify your experience, not create new experience.
Review the document before you apply
Read the full resume for consistency, spelling, accurate dates, and a clear connection to the role. Choose readable headings and a layout that suits your content. Applicant tracking systems vary; no template, keyword list, or match score guarantees parsing, an interview, or a job. Preview the document on desktop or mobile, then download a PDF or editable Word file. Downloads require sign-in and use no AI credits. Open the exported file and check it before sending.
For the full editing and export workflow, follow the resume builder tutorial. Keep your base resume so you can review it again for the next role.
